Dog Ear Care
Yeast infections are especially common in dogs with floppy ears such as cockers & retrievers. A lack of oxygen to the ear canal smothers the aerobic bacteria that is beneficial to the ear, allowing the yeast to grow.
Normal wax in the ear is usually light tan in color. A dark brown, odorous discharge is typical of a yeast infection or ear mites. Many veterinarians recommend over-the-counter Lotrimin for "jock itch" to treat yeast infections. It takes a product with an insecticide to treat ear mites, which are contageous from pet to pet.
We recommend that dogs be treated routinely with an astringent ear cleaner to dry the canal and help to prevent yeast. Routinely use a miticide ear treatment along wth Frontline Plus or Certifect to prevent mites. Read more about Dog Ear Problems
