Dog Flea Shampoo & Sprays
There are several types of dog flea shampoo and sprays. We don't sell any that are made from the harsh chemicals used in years gone by. Most are made from pyrethrums, a natural or synthesized chemical that comes from the chrysanthemum flower. They kill fleas almost instantaneously and have very few residual side effects for either the pets or the people treating them.
Pyrethrin and resmethrin sprays are now water-based to prevent so much skin dehydration. A dog with dry skin becomes itchy and irritated, exacerbating flea-bite symptoms and flea bite dermatitis.
New, natural shampoos are sweeping the market. They generally have a citrus scent and contain d-limonene, a citrus-rind extract that is often used as a solvent in much stronger concentrations. While most of the d-limonene shampoos cannot legally claim to "kill fleas", d-limonene is known to dehydrate insects and lead to their demise. The use of these citrus-based products not only alleviates the worry of toxic chemicals, but keeps the grooming environment smelling fresh.
